Mind Body and Boogie features international, national and local artists playing a range of music from jazz, rock, funk and blues to classical and folk. The weekend’s theme is participation, and to that effect there will be open mic slots and have-a-go-dance sessions, led by top dance instructors, including jazz jive, ceroc, Arabian and street dancing lessons. Each venue will also feature displays relating to positive mental health and poems by people ;who have experienced mental health problems, alongside poems about Hurricane Katrina.
Week4ADay is a small self-funding Community Interest Company raising awareness of mental health issues and helping people with mental health issues engage in social inclusion projects that act as stepping stones to employment and/or education. Before Hurricane Katrina struck, Week4ADay members attended a mental health conference in New Orleans, and whilst there met and heard a remarkable young musician called Troy ‘Trombone Shorty’ Andrews. It’s a year since Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans, devastating the Louisiana coastline and killing nearly 2,000 people. The population of New Orleans has been reduced by half. Over 200,000 people, many who lost everything, have been relocated to other parts of the USA leaving jobs, friends, family and communities behind. Suicide rates have quadrupled, the state has lost half its mental health workers, and New Orleans has just 60 psychiatric beds. After the hurricane hit, David Raines, director of Week4ADay, contacted Troy Andrews and put the idea of a joint fundraising initiative to him; Troy was enthusiastic about helping, and Mind Body and Boogie was born.

Mind Body and Boogie performers include:
Troy ‘Trombone Shorty’ Andrews and Orleans Avenue
Troy grew up in the historic Treme neighbourhood of New Orleans, famous for its role in nurturing the earliest New Orleans jazz musicians, and an area hit hard by Hurricane Katrina. From the time he could walk, Troy literally followed in the footsteps of some of the greatest pioneers of jazz, including Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, Jelly Roll Morton and Kid Ory, all of whom grew up around or played in the streets of the Treme neighbourhood. He started playing trombone at the age of six and was given the nickname ‘Trombone Shorty’ because he was smaller than his instrument. Troy graduated from the New Orleans School of Performing Arts last year and, although only 20, has already established a reputation in US and international jazz circles. Troy plays trombone, trumpet, keyboards and percussion, and has performed with many of the New Orleans greats including the Neville Brothers, Winston Marsalis, and Dr John. He has recently been on tour with Lenny Kravitz. With his band, Orleans Avenue, Troy weaves a musical journey through the various styles of jazz, from its New Orleans roots to the bands’ own energetic fusion of modern and traditional.
In addition to playing Mind Body and Boogie, Week4ADay has also organised a fundraising tour for Troy Andrews and Orleans Avenue; see details at end of press release.

With thanks to Arts Council England

To The People of Bollington and our Guests.
Thank you for your support and encouragement.
All of the artists performing have gifted their time to help Week4aday raise funds to develop services helping those who experience mental health problems.
The statistics say there is one in four of the population,
One in four of your family, One in four of your friends will experience mental health problems. If this is true then there will be a fair proportion of Bollington's population and the visitors to Mind Body and Boogie who will be experiencing mental health problems themselves. So we ask that you treat everyone as if they have a mental health problem
with sensitivity, understanding, tolerance & respect.
Mind Body and Boogie is organised by Week4aday
